Well, Happy 2020, y’all! 2019 came and went in a blur, and we’re already here at a new year, and a new decade. Talk about something that’s weird to type! As crazy and awesome as 2019 was, I have a feeling 2020 is going to kick the decade off with a bang. To start, I’m making a list of my 2020 goals and resolutions.
Who’s ready for a fresh start? A new year is always full of resolutions and promises to be a better you. “New Year, new you” mantras are everywhere. I make resolutions or set goals every year, and sometimes I’m good about making them happen or sticking to them. Other times, not so much. This year, I’m making a resolution to practice better self-care.
Happy Monday, y’all! How was everyone’s first week of 2016? It felt great to get back to work and be with my team again. Every day we’re hustlin’. Last week I launched Be Bold in 2016 with four amazing bloggers. Be Bold in 2016 is a linkup series for all bloggers to share their goals and intentions for the New Year and grow their communities. I loved reading about what everyone had chosen as their words of the year and why those chose those words. Check out the posts from my wonderful co-hosts Gina, Christina, Catherine and Allie for more fierce inspiration!
With a new year comes a whole bunch of exciting, new things for the blog, which also means new readers! So I thought it would be a perfect time for a new introduction for my new readers that might have just joined along for the ride. Plus, no introduction is the same, and who doesn’t love talking about herself?
So, allow me to introduce myself.
Hiii and welcome to A Thought and a Half! I’m Kate, the Southern belle behind the blog. I call myself a Southern lifestyle blogger without really committing to one specific city. I’ve moved so many times and called so many places “home” that I don’t think I could commit to just one. My family’s roots are in North Carolina; I’ve lived in North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Virginia. I currently live in Tennessee, and I love every little bit of it!
Welcome to the first week of the Be Bold in 2016 linkup! If you missed the announcement, check out my post here. Each Friday this month, we’ll be linking up to share our goals for the New Year and to connect with other bloggers to find accountability partners and, best of all, cheerleaders. It’s all about making 2016 bright and bold for all of us. Follow along with me, Gina, Christina, Allie and Catherine for all the fun!
I don’t always admit it, but I love New Year’s time. A New Year brings all sorts of possibilities for new adventures and opportunities. It’s a fresh start with a (mostly) clean slate. It’s a chance to reflect on the previous year and look ahead to what’s next. I’ve set my goals that I want to work toward this year. The next step is to focus and make them happen.
I’ve never been one to pick a “word of the year,” or get really serious about New Year’s resolutions. Do people really stick to those words for the whole year? And who sticks to resolutions? Admittedly mine usually last about a month. For some reason, I tend to do better when I think them as “goals” rather than “resolutions.” I’m not entirely sure why. It’s just semantics, really.
But this year feels like a good year to change that. This year, I’ve chosen a focus word to help me make my goals happen and live a bright and bold 2016.
My Word of the Year for 2016 is care.
Happy First Blog Post of 2016, y’all! What better way to start off than with a killer collection of songs to get you pumped to tackle all of your goals for the year?!
Music always puts me in a good mood, and good music takes that good mood up several notches. I’ve always been a junkie for a good playlist; seriously I have about 10 saved on my iPod at any given time. I looked for any reason to make a mix CD for a friend just so I could put together an awesome playlist.
I really like music, y’all. And that’s why I wanted to share some of my favorites today, to help y’all start 2016 on a strong note! Haha…note…music…get it? I’m hilarious.
Y’all, I am super stoked to make this announcement today! But first, I have a question for you:
Do you want to be bold in the New Year?
Several weeks ago, I started thinking that I wanted to kick off the New Year with something big. I wanted a place to share my goals for 2016 and to connect with other bloggers. I wanted to offer a place where other bloggers can come and share their goals, and find accountability partners and cheerleaders to help them reach their goals. Everyone operates better with some encouraging words and support from peers.
Most of all, though, I wanted to offer a space where we can all come together, grow our communities and discover other fabulous blogs and meet fantastic bloggers. Nothing brings me more joy than finding a new blog to read and a new blogger to get to know… and seeing others doing the same!
So, without further ado, today I am so pumped to bring y’all:
Be Bold in 2016: a blogging community to make your 2016 brighter!

Jan. 15: What are your blogging goals for the year?
Jan. 22: What are your health goals for the year?
Jan. 29: What are your personal goals for the year?
How can your “word of the year” apply to your goals in other areas and help you achieve them? Your word of the year can help you focus your efforts so you can work efficiently toward your goals.

Well, 2014, it’s been a heck of a year. Lots of fun and memorable things happened this year, and I couldn’t be more thankful for any of them. Today I’m taking a little trip down memory lane and remembering this year’s highlights.
14 things I did in 2014:
1. Accepted to grad school for Elon’s Interactive Media master’s program.
2. I had an article published on the PRSSA national blog, Progressions.
3. Attended a Reel Big Fish concert at VT. Met the lead singer, Aaron Barrett, in the parking lot after the show. This was also my first ska concert.
4. Somehow became a wine fan. Thanks, Fork & Cork and North Carolina wine.
5. Wrote some of my favorite pieces ever for Pretty Southern, including my “goodbye letter” to VT and Blacksburg.
6. Graduated from VT with a double major. And yes, I still miss Blacksburg a whole lot.
7. Traveled around Eastern Europe for two weeks with an amazing group of people. See some of my favorite photos from my trip here.
8. First trip “down the shore” to Cape May with Kevin & his family for 4th of July. I wrote about it for Pretty Southern, too.

9. Started grad school at Elon.
10. Went back to VT for a couple of football games, and saw one at Chapel Hill.
11. Attended a David Sedaris reading in Greensboro…and met him and got my book signed!
12. Visited New York City twice: once to see Aladdin on Broadway, and the other with Kevin and his sister to see the city at Christmas.
Thanks for the memories, 2014!
