Easy Homemade Guacamole

I’m not sure about y’all, but guacamole is one of my favorite foods in the world. Now that good avocados are coming back into season, and the weather is starting to warm up, I’ll make guacamole as my afternoon snack several times throughout the week. My favorite homemade guacamole recipe is quick, easy, and so hard to eat just a few bites!

If I had a dollar for every time in my 20s that I had chips and guacamole for lunch and/or dinner, I’d be very rich right now. No joke. The number of times I came home tired from work and didn’t feel like cooking, so I made guac and busted open a bag of chips… it was often.

Guacamole is an absolute necessity in my diet, especially in the warmer months when avocados are so fresh and ripe. While I do love topping my burgers with sliced avocado, and of course I love some good avocado toast for breakfast, nothing beats fresh, easy guacamole dip with tortilla chips.

Another reason I love guacamole is how simple and easy it is to make. If you’ve got all the ingredients, there’s really no excuse not to make it. You just add everything to a bowl and mash it all together. If you’ve got a molcajete, even better, more power to you. But a bowl and a fork work just as well.
Once you have your base recipe down, you can add as many extras as you want: tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, cilantro, corn, whatever. I’m super basic and prefer my guacamole plain, though. And perhaps the most controversial: I add a little dollop of Greek yogurt to my guac.
Yep, I’m that person. Not sorry about it. I know it’s not authentic, but I love the slight bit of creaminess just a spoonful of yogurt adds to guacamole. It brings it together. Sour cream also does the trick, but I keep Greek yogurt in my fridge instead of sour cream.

Here’s my favorite easy guacamole recipe.

Honestly, it’s the only guacamole recipe you’ll ever need. This can easily be doubled (or tripled, if you dare) for larger servings or parties.
To make it, you will need:

  • 1 large, ripe avocado
  • 1 Tbsp (ish) plain Greek yogurt
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Other desired seasonings (I like garlic powder and onion powder, occasionally cilantro)

First, slice your avocado in half and discard the pit. Scoop out the green flesh and put it in a medium-sized bowl.
Add the yogurt, lime juice, and desired seasonings to the bowl. Mash everything together with a fork (or potato masher, if you’re making a big batch) until it reaches your desired smoothness. I like my guac pretty smooth, but you can keep it on the chunkier side if you like that.

Fold in any additional mix-ins (diced tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, etc.).

Serve as soon as possible in a serving dish with chips or dippers of choice (it’s also great with fresh vegetables). Garnish with a sprig of fresh cilantro.
