I swear it feels like I was just writing my September Friday Five post. Do I say that every month? Maybe that’s because I didn’t blog a whole lot this month—sorry, y’all, lots going on behind the scenes! Either way, the end of October is near and it’s time for another edition of Friday Five.
The month of October was the month of me getting back into my swing of things. I started going out by myself again and went to a few food-and-drink events. I’d forgotten how much I love and had missed those events. There are so many new restaurants, bars and breweries coming to Chattanooga and I can’t wait for them to officially open.
If you’re curious, you can hear more about some of those places on my podcast…which has also been keeping me quite busy lately! Anyway, more on those things later. For now…
Here’s my Friday Five roundup for the month of October!
ONE / Fried pickles + pimiento cheese. We all know I love pimiento cheese, but you know what it pairs really great with? Fried pickles. I promise it’s not weird. There’s a restaurant here that has a fried pickles, pimiento cheese & grilled sourdough appetizer, and it’s one of my favorite dishes in Chattanooga. I’ve been working on my own recipe, because let’s be honest, I can’t afford to pay Public House whenever I want fried pickles three times a week. Stay tuned for that.
TWO / Wine Over Water. It’s one of Chattanooga’s biggest events of the year, and each year I go, I see why. The weather this year was beautiful, albeit a little hot and humid for October, but it made those chilled white wines and rosés super refreshing and enjoyable. I got to see some old friends and even made some new friends from Nashville and Kentucky! Check out my “live from the Bridge” podcast for more. That Prosecco popsicle was INCREDIBLE, by the way.
THREE / Going out alone. Okay, not in like, an unsafe way. Just in a, “going to food-and-drink events without a date or a plan of meeting up with friends there,” kind of way. I used to do this a lot, and then I didn’t, and now I’ve been challenging myself to do it again. It’s a little terrifying at first, but I’m glad I’ve been able to do it again. Even if I don’t go with someone or a group, I always end up meeting someone new, and that’s good enough!
FOUR / New York City. I went up to NYC for a few days for work earlier in the month. The last time I was in NYC was four years ago, when my then-boyfriend took me for Christmas/our anniversary. I’d never spent longer than a day in the city, and this time I was there for three days. If I’m being honest, I’m not cut out for the NYC way of life, but a short visit is a good change of pace. I did get to check out Chelsea Market, and I got a taste of Junior’s Cheesecake. That crepe was apple, brie, arugula, honey, and some kind of balsamic reduction, and it was delicious.
FIVE / Big Little Lies. Y’all, I haven’t flown through a book so fast since I read And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie in high school. I usually don’t go for these types of books, but Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty came so highly recommended from several friends that I couldn’t resist. I definitely screamed out loud at some of the most suspenseful parts. Check out my friend Caroline’s review if you’re curious. Now I need to watch the show.
That about rounds up my October Friday Five. Like I said, it was a busy month, but a good kind of busy. My parents are coming to town this weekend to help put some finishing touches on my new apartment. I always love having them visit.
Also on the horizon are some pretty big changes around here. Don’t worry, the blog isn’t going anywhere! It’s just getting a little upgrade. I’ve been working with my friend from grad school on the changes and I’m so excited for everything to go live. So, keep your eyes open for some new stuff around these parts.
How was your October? What are some highlights from your last month?
