It’s no secret that I absolutely love Christmastime. The season is full of joy and cheer and everyone is just happier. Or at least I am.
My favorite part of the Christmas season is Christmas songs.
I’ve always loved Christmas music: in church, on the radio, at home, pretty much anywhere. When I travel to North Carolina, Christmas music keeps me awake and focused on my drive. Every year my parents and I go to the candlelight service on Christmas Eve, and singing “Silent Night” always makes me tear up a little. It’s my mom’s favorite Christmas hymn and there’s just something really moving about a whole congregation singing together in candlelight.
But I digress a bit.
Each year I feel like there are more and more new Christmas songs released. I have a love/hate relationship with pop Christmas music. Some of it is well done and catchy, and the rest is just… well, meh. But this year, I’ve found myself liking a lot more pop Christmas music than in the past.
In fact, I’m pretty obsessed with several Christmas songs this year.
These songs are definitely my favorites of the year and I’m not ashamed of how much I’ve played and listened to them already.
Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 – Trans Siberian Orchestra // Okay so this one isn’t a “new” obsession but it is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs. I saw TSO in concert for my 18th birthday and to this day, it’s still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
O Holy Night – Brett Young // This guy is one of my favorite new country singers (and that voice is smooth like velvet), and when I saw that he was releasing some Christmas songs, my heart was all aflutter. And that voice singing one of the most beautiful Christmas songs is the icing on the Christmas cake.
Nutcracker Medley – Joshua Bell & Straight No Chaser // The Nutcracker suite is another seasonal favorite of mine; when I played in symphony in high school, we played the entire suite for one of our winter concerts. This is a really unique spin on the suite, with Joshua Bell playing violin and Straight No Chaser providing the a capella vocals.
Little Drummer Boy – for KING & COUNTRY // A couple weeks ago, my friend and I were exchanging videos of our favorite Christmas songs with each other, and she sent me this one. It’s something else.
Glow – Brett Eldredge // I am absolutely ashamed of how late I am to the Brett Eldredge train. He is amazing. He released his Christmas album “Glow” last year and I listened to it so much last year. The title track is definitely the best song on the album. Also, Brett Eldredge is a dreamboat.
I Saw Three Ships – The Piano Guys // I rang this song on handbells several times in my bell-ringing days, but I was honestly never a big fan of it. Then I heard The Piano Guys’ version on their new Christmas album and y’all, it’s so beautiful.
Related: their album “Christmas Together” is probably my favorite Christmas album of the season.
Joy to the Mountain – Hanson // Yeah, I mean the “MMBop” guys. I had kind of forgotten about them until I heard about their Christmas album. And y’all, it’s surprisingly good! This song is my top pick from it.
Mary Did You Know – 98 Degrees // Noticing a pattern with all the boy bands releasing Christmas albums this year? 98 Degrees released a new Christmas album and it’s everything I could ever ask for in a pop Christmas album.
Joy to the World (Unspeakable Joy) – Chris Tomlin // Again, this one is a few years old, but it’s such a lovely arrangement of a classic Christmas hymn. We played this with the youth band at my old church.
These songs are only a handful of my favorite Christmas songs this year. Check out my Christmas Obsessions playlist below for more Christmas music joy and cheer.
Christmas songs are one of the best parts of the Christmas season. Music keeps me in a holly jolly good mood and Christmas music makes the season absolutely perfect.
